Madelene Przybysz, America in the Weeds (Pigment is still too much for Some), 2020, Graphite on Canvas, 40”x 32”

Artist Statement

Reflecting over the past weeks of June, there is no way to describe the emotions that come to mind. A collective distress, destruction, exhaustion and universal solidarity following the tragic and unnecessary deaths of black lives. We cannot dismiss the fact that we have seen and felt most of these emotions in ourselves, friends, family, strangers and media. It is difficult for some to accept that such strong ideologies of superiority and “White America” still thrive throughout our country believing that minorities -specifically people of color- are significantly lesser. It is hard not to question the values of America especially when people seem to contradict and become hypocritical in their explanations on all sides. There are many steps that need be taken, many gaps that need to be mended within systems and conversations that deliberately rip us apart. We cannot say the great red, white and blue stands for a “liberty and justice for all” haven when actions are still carried out with no justice. I choose to leave the canvas unprimed and unpainted as individuals are still not protected by what these colors are thought to secure.
