Artist Statement

Driving north on June 2 on the island’s major road, I noticed this spontaneous installation on the overpass. The image is made of red plastic beverage cups, the bottom ends stuck through the openings in the chain link. I was struck by the aptness and beauty of the metaphor: breaching the fences that often divide us by honoring George Floyd’s name with a large heart.

This food stand for giving and taking groceries and household supplies during the pandemic shutdown was constructed by an anonymous family in our neighborhood. I have deposited tuna, and macaroni & cheese. The most surprising donation I have seen is a six-pack of beer.
