Prairie Education Center
An exhibit of student work from Architecture 2201: Design I, Fall Semester, 2020
February 15, 2021
This project explores the relationship between architecture, ecology and environmental stewardship.
Students in the Fall 2020 Architecture Design I class were challenged to design a Prairie Environmental Education Center to provide educational outreach to the COD community. The project site this is located adjacent to the Russell R. Kirt Prairie, an 18 acre natural area on the College of DuPage main campus.
The Prairie Education Center will house exhibits and educational programing on sustainability, environmental stewardship and ecology. This center will include spaces for education, research, and outreach. The project strives to educate visitors (and COD students) about the importance of the region’s natural heritage, as well as physically connect visitors to the prairie landscape itself. These architectural design projects seek to embody the idea of environmental stewardship and sustainability through architectural design.
