Adapting Pillars
Solo exhibit by Karolina Szumilas
March 1, 2018- March 23, 2018
Reception Thursday, March 1, noon
This is a solo exhibit by COD art student Karolina Szumilas. Adapting Pillars uses a mixed-media installation of 3D, organic shapes to explore themes of nature and current environmental issues.
In this exhibition I'm transforming synthetic materials into nature inspired structures. Each one is individually developed and represents a different stage in time. I’m using bright industrial colors in contrast with organic forms to question human vs nature relationships, and the “new” environments that we create. In this case the nature is adapting to such conditions, creating a morphed organism.
I grew up closely surrounded by nature and that’s been the main influence on all my work ranging from photography, painting, ceramics and now sculpture. With each of the disciplines I explore different aspects of nature and not only illustrate but invent and create based on my observations”.
