AtlaS

Drawing II

Atlas opens with a reception at 3pm on Wednesday 4th of March and concludes on Friday 13th of March.

“If we have retained an element of dream in our memories, if we have gone beyond merely assembling exact recollection, bit by bit the house that was lost in the mists of time will appear from out the shadow. We do nothing to reorganize it; with intimacy it recovers its entity, in the mellowness and imprecision of the inner life. It is as though something fluid had collected our memories and ourselves were dissolved in this fluid of the past” (Bachelard 57).

Atlas is an exhibition of artworks from the students of College of DuPage class, Drawing II. Each artist conceptualized and executed a map based on personal memory. The goal of this investigation was to challenge ourselves to open up to thought process as content and to recognize personal, symbolic and expressive exploration of how materialization can lead to new directions. The process of recollection was examined as we probed for contextual aspects of memory, defined through sources beyond sight, such as sound, smell, touch, or a further aspect of memory landscape. We drew on emotional and sensory content, which was linked to specificity of form, through which we examined how both abstract and universal language can reconcile or fracture through memory filters. Because of this, each map is unique to its maker, yet collectively we invite the viewer to define their experience of the maps both individually and as a communal atlas.
