In addition to his own artistic production, Lazo works tirelessly to create inclusive, diverse cultural programs and spaces. Lazo has co-founded some of Seattle’s most iconic traditions within the Latino community, including Seattle’s annual Oaxacan celebration known as Guelaguetza, International Children’s Day, and the Day of the Dead celebrations at many venues, including the Seattle Art Museum.
Title of Work: Abrazando a Nuestros Ancestros, (Embracing Our Ancestors)
Description of Work: I am Zapotec and Mixtec, from Oaxaca, Mexico and consider the Olmec or “Rubber People” to be among my ancestors. This piece features a large rubber tree, with its branches extending outward, in a symbolic embrace of the human figures, whose long arms hug them back. With intense colors and dynamic iconographic motifs of birds, children’s toy boats, candles, buttons, and other elements of contemporary everyday life our ancestors transcend generations and cultures.
