Lecture: A Manga Odyssey: Tracing manga from Hokusai to today

In this presentation, we will explore the fascinating evolution of manga, tracing its roots from the Edo period to the rise of modern manga. We will begin by examining the work of artists like Hokusai and Santo Kyoden and delve into the key developments that shaped the emergence of modern manga. We will analyze how the introduction of Western comics impacted Japanese artists and contributed to the development of unique Japanese manga styles. This lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of the historical and cultural factors that have shaped the evolution of manga, from its early origins to its status as a global phenomenon.

Becky Reece is a Reference and Instruction Librarian at College of DuPage. She holds a BS in History from Illinois State University and a MS in Library and Information Science from Chicago State University. Becky’s research focuses on the integration of graphic novels, manga, and comics into higher education. Her forthcoming book chapter, "If you build it, they will come: A case for manga in the academic library," will be published in The Community College Library: Collections and Technical Services (Association of College and Research Libraries, 2025).
