Adaptation

Time Based Media I and II

An online exhibition beginning November 24, 2020

We are not as we were long ago; we do not happen only once.

Adaptation is a virtual exhibition created by students in Time Based Media I and II, incorporating video, installation, projection mapping, sound, and performance. The theme reflects connections between their work, class readings, and the current moment. Adaptation is overcoming challenges with resolve and resilience. It is not controlling the fire, but learning to dance with the flames. It is translating the static. It is radically imagining a better way in order to survive on our planet. It is evolving, even in suffering. It is moving forward, away from fear.

Video installation and mapping on plastic, aluminum, sheets, mosquito netting, rope, and other found objects
16’x10’x8’
4 minute loop

Artist Statement
This work was created as part of a workshop with Visiting Artist Mary Mattingly. Transforming everyday materials like sheets, rope, and plastic into utilitarian items that could be used for shelter, warmth, and safety, Time Based Media students first created their individual functional pieces, then combined them to create a collaborative structural installation, and later utilized video mapping software for the final piece. The projected videos reflect their ideas related to climate, the contemporary sublime, adaptation, and the future.

Artist Statement
In response to the global pandemic we have adapted to new precautions/protocol for public safety, such as wearing masks and social distancing. This performance, 6 Feet Apart, demonstrates the new restraint and space between two individuals who lean, run and reach for one another, but ultimately will never touch.
